When you’re pregnant, one of the first things you might think about is how many baby clothes you’ll need? You probably have a few friends who have recently had babies, and they’ve given you some advice, but it can still be confusing trying to figure out what to buy. In this blog post, we will provide a comprehensive guide on how many baby clothes you need in each size, as well as answer some common questions that parents have about buying baby clothes. We’ll also provide a checklist of essential items by size!

How Many Newborn-Size Clothes Do I Need?

How many newborn outfits you will need will depend mostly on the size of your newborn. If your little bundle of joy weighs between 5 to 8 pounds you will generally need around six to eight newborn size clothes. This includes both onesies and sleepers. However, if his weight is more than that you might not need at all any newborn clothing item. Usually, your doctor will tell in what weight range your baby is expected to be.

How Long Do Babies Wear Newborn Clothes?

Babies typically only wear newborn clothes for a few weeks or until they reach the weight limit for those clothes. It’s important to keep in mind that babies grow quickly, so you may not be able to use everything you bought.

Is The Newborn Size The Same As 0-3 Months?

Many people think that newborn size and 0-three months are the same, but that is not always the case. Newborn clothes are generally for babies who weigh between five and eight pounds, while 0-three month clothes are for babies who weigh seven to twelve pounds.

Can I Put a Newborn Into Three Month Clothes?

If your newborn baby is on the larger side, you may be able to put them in 0-three month clothes as early as two weeks old. However, if your baby is smaller than average, you may need to wait a few weeks before putting them in 0-three month clothes.

Personally, with my first daughter, I was able to use only a handful of newborn outfits during the first week since she weighed almost 8 pounds already at birth. After that, she kept gaining weight very quickly so I didn’t get the chance to use my newborn wardrobe. Lucky me, I had a second daughter who weighed 6.5 pounds at birth and stayed pretty skinny for was while so I was able to dress her with all the cute newborn outfits I had in stock.

How Many Outfits Does a Newborn Need at The Hospital?

Some hospitals may provide you with a few outfits for your newborn baby, but it’s pretty rare so you should bring your own. I will recommend you to bring at least 3 outfits. It might be a good idea to bring even more than that just in case you have to stay longer than 2 days because of medical complications. You should also pack some socks, a hat, and a receiving blanket.

How Many Baby Clothes Do I Need?

The truth is that there isn’t one fit for all answer to the question of how many baby clothes do I need. However, there are three main factors that can influence the amount of baby clothing you need:

Budget

Baby clothes are very cute and irresistible, it can be hard to resist when you are in the store. Even though they are very tiny they can be very pricey. If your budget is tight make a list of the essential baby clothing you need for the first few months and try to stick to your list while you are shopping. It might be easier to do your shopping online than in person. You can also include some essential baby clothes such as sleepers and clothes for special occasions on your baby registry so your friends and family can help you out to reduce the baby’s clothes bill.

Available Space

While the budget might not be an issue for you the limited space can be.

If your baby’s room doesn’t have a lot of storage space you might want to limit the number of baby outfits.

Babies are growing very quickly and you need to stay well organized. If your storage space is limited it can become quickly messy and overwhelming to distinguish the different sizes of clothes.

For instance, since my wardrobe space was very limited I decided to put the clothes in different boxes and place a tag on each one such as 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, and 9-12 months. Every month or two I was reorganizing the clothes, getting rid of the ones that were too small replacing them with the next size.

This way when I got pregnant with the second one it was very convenient to do the inventory of the outfits I already had from my first one and make sure to buy only necessary baby items.

Another good way to manage your baby dressing is to purchase gradually when you notice you are missing a specific clothing item. Make sure though to have ready some basic clothing items such as a couple of onesies, hats, mittens, bodysuits, pants, some winter clothes, and swaddles.

Laundry Frequency

While there are a lot of advantages of being minimalist and buying the minimum amount of baby clothes and outfit essentials, at some point, you might become overwhelmed and not be able to do the laundry as often as you were used to. In that case, it will be convenient to have more extra clothes that will allow taking longer laundry breaks. So you should definitely ask yourself how often do you want to do laundry?

How Many Onesies Do I Need For a Newborn Baby?

Onesies are one of the essential baby clothes to buy. You should have at least six to eight onesies on hand for your newborn baby. This will give you enough to change them multiple times a day and still have some extras in case of accidents.

How many outfits does a newborn go through in a day will depend on many factors such as blowouts, spits, weather conditions?

Some newborns will need 1 or 2 outfits while others will require up to 4.

If you are leaving in a cold country such as Canada and your little one is born in the middle of the winter you will also need a couple of layers of clothing to get him out for a walk or a doctor’s appointment.

Why Does My Baby Need Sleepers at Night?

Babies wear sleeper pajamas during the day and night for a few reasons.

First, they are comfortable and keep your baby warm. Second, they help prevent your baby from scratching their face or pulling their hair out while they’re asleep. Finally, they make it easy to change your baby’s diaper without having to wake them up.

How Much Should You Spend on Baby Clothes?
